Mont Saint Michel Abbey
The abbey on the Mont Saint Michel is definately worth a visit during your stay. This architectural medieval masterpiece was built by monks in the Middle Ages. Today, the abbey is one of the most visited cultural sites in France.
In 708, the Archbishop Aubert ordered the construction of a sanctuary on the Mount following Archangel Saint Michael's apparition. A community of canons settled on the Mount.
In 966, Benedictine monks arrived on the Mount and built a large church at the top of the rock thus developing the monastery's activity. The abbey became a popular pilgrimage site with western christians.
In the 13th century new constructions were built to complete the marvel.
You can visit the abbey alone or on a guided tour, by day or by night. Visit the different rooms including the abbey church and perpendicular Gothic choir. The Abbey boasts three architectural styles: Roman, Gothic and perpendicular Gothic.
