The tides at Mont Saint Michel
The Mont Saint Michel offers a spectacular show of the highest tide in Europe. A rare and surprising show !
When the sea comes in « at the speed of a galloping horse …
At high tide, the sea goes out to the edge of the bay revealing a huge expanse of sand and pebbles before it comes back in again at a speed of up to 30 km/h.
The tidal bore, a unique sight
When the tide coefficient is more than 90, the tidal bore travels up the Sée, the Sélune and the Couesnon rivers. This tidal phenomenon can be seen from Mont Saint Michel as well as from the "Pointe du Grouin du Sud" near Vains.
This sudden rise of water is a rare phenomenon that you can watch from the observation site an hour to 1¾ hours before high tide.
